Moving into a new country could be an exciting venture; with the thought of discovering a new country, new cities and areas waiting to be explored, a new culture to embrace, meeting new people, acquiring some new knowledge,… But it could also be an overwhelming experience as moving and settling into a new country is not as easy. the initial excitement would quickly fade out and leave place to other, less pleasant emotions if not handle the right way. There are a number of things to do in order to make moving in a new country and settling in less stressful. 

Here are 5 tips to help someone settle in a new country. 

1 – PLAN AHEAD

Before the actual move, research some information on the country you are moving into. Plan for your big move to make your transition easier. Know as much as possible about where you are moving into would immensely help, so do research the basics including things like housing, health, transportation, the currency, language, condition for settling in, … 

2 – LEARN THE LANGUAGE 

Once you move into a new country, the first thing to do is to learn the language, if different from yours. This first step would allow you not to feel left out around people and give you some confidence. Do not let the language barrier hold you back. You can learn by reading some books, listen to some audiobooks, go to school, used subtitles whenever watching the television, an easy way is to watch kids’ cartoon.  

3 – HAVE A ROUTINE 

Set up a routine that would make settling in much easier. Most countries have different ways of living, make a routine around your new country’s ways, adapt your routine to the routine people are used to the new country, it would be much easier than trying the other way around. Make your place a home by adding some personal touches, basically, create a home away from home. 

4 – BE TOURISTY 

Discover as much as possible about your new living place, explore your surroundings. Be a tourist. Figure out and get used to the public transportation system.  Get to know your host. you need to get out and take advantage of what the country has to offer. keep an open mind and not be shy. Do not forget to have a culinary adventure, try out local food. 

5 – MAKE FRIENDS 

Do not keep yourself to yourself. Get involved in local activities. Be approachable, nice to people, listen to people and be considerate of the people around you, that would help make friends. There are plenty of places where you can make new friends, for example, social media platforms, take a class or club, volunteering, look for a local expat community. Make new friends but keep old friends.
